Jobs, money: Some good employment news in report, but county's income levels causing concern
JUSTIN MCINTOSH The Marietta Times
Randall Perry, stockholder of Perry & Associates, CPAs, A.C., of 428 Second St., works at his computer Tuesday. Accounting jobs fall under the professional and business services category, which saw a 53 percent increase in jobs from 2000 to 2008, according to a recent report by the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions.
March 10, 2010
A new report on Ohio’s economy shows Washington County continues to bear the brunt of the state’s fiscal woes.
The good news, area officials said, is that there are more jobs to be found in the county compared to almost a decade ago. The bad news is they might not pay as well as others around the state.
From 2000 to 2008, Washington County added about 600 jobs, according to the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions report. Yet the median household income for the county ranked 67th lowest in the state in 2008.

Baseball cards as they used to be
Thu, February 4, 2010 @ 2:30AM
Winter storm's coming - who cares? I'm looking ahead to baseball time. Pitchers and catchers report in a couple of weeks. Spring training gmes beginthe first week of March. Opening day is just two months away. My Indians have the perfect strategy for the upcoming season. As of this writing they've signed only one free agent, a catcher who will be a mentor to the club's three prospects. We'll see how that works out; could be a repeat of "Major League's" Tom Beregener character who led the team to success and a win over those Yankees. Anyway, reading Cleveland.com, it seems like everyone's down on the team and jumped on the LeBron/Cavs bandwagon. He's an amazing basketball player for sure and he plays in Cleveland, at least for this season. His heart seems to pulled to New York City, kind of like C.C. Sabathia. Back to this 2010 strategy by the Tribe. If everyone thinks the team could sink below the Royals then the only way is up.

Top 10 Films of 2009
Fri, March 5, 2010 @ 10:01PM
With the Academy Awards ceremony just two days away, I thought now would be a good time (and probably my last chance) to unveil my picks for the top 10 films of 2009. There’s still a few movies from the year I’d like to see, but if I wait any longer, I won’t even be able to pretend my list is relevant. And I do so love pretending things that I write are relevant. Anyway, here are my thoughts on the best 2009 had to offer at the movies: 10. “Avatar” — For technical achievements, James Cameron’s epic stands head and shoulders above the pack and is worthy of acclaim. But it’s kept from true greatness by a story that is, not bad, just mundane. You’ve seen it a thousand times, but it’s never looked this good. 9. “The Invention of Lying” — Set in a world where people only tell the truth, Ricky Gervais stars as a man who develops the ability to lie.

Students on the job
Thu, January 28, 2010 @ 3:43PM
About 40 Marietta Middle School students visited The Marietta Times this morning to learn about ways we use computers in our jobs. The eighth-graders learned about designing newspaper pages, posting stories to our Web site and how some staffers create newspaper advertisements. We enjoyed having the students here and hope a few them saw something they liked. That was the idea of the program, The Teen Career Awareness Initiative which is offered through the Washington County Family and Children's First Council. Eleven local businesses paticipated. Thanks to Marylou Moegling who helped to organize the event. Check Friday's Marietta Times for a full report on the students' day visiting local businesse.

That's vegan?! Oreos
Mon, March 8, 2010 @ 11:55AM
It's not all alfalfa sprouts and wheat germ. We vegans get our cake and sometimes we eat it too. Case in point: Oreos. Yup, they're vegan. Ingredients: SUGAR, ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], RIBOFLAVIN [VITAMIN B2], FOLIC ACID), HIGH OLEIC CANOLA OIL AND/OR PALM OIL AND/OR CANOLA OIL, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, BAKING SODA, CORNSTARCH, SALT, SOY LECITHIN (EMULSIFIER), VANILLIN-AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, CHOCOLATE. They might not be the healthiest dessert option, but this just goes to show that more things than you might expect are vegan. I'll be looking at some other surprising things that are — and are not — vegan. You might find yourself surprised at a few of the.

A tapping good time
Mon, March 1, 2010 @ 10:07AM
I saw an item running in the paper about a program at Washington State on Feb. 27. It was called "Buckets and Tap Shoes." Being that my daughter is taking tap and ballet, I thought it might be something she would enjoy. I talked the grandparents into going as well. Boy, am I glad we went. "Explosive," "Awesome," "Amazing" -- these words don't even begin to describe the show that these brothers out of Minneapolis, Andy and Rick Ausland, put on for the packed house. The music was right up my alley. A lot of Minneapolis funk (think Prince) with some jazz, swing and classical thrown in for good measure. The brothers brought along three other musicians, who were outstanding in their own right, and they funked the place up. There was a lot of banging on buckets and other interesting objects, including the auditorium seats.

This winter is nothing compared to when we were kids
Tue, February 16, 2010 @ 2:06PM
By now it is safe to say most people are sick of the winter. School children have been stuck at home for what seems like the better part of a month, the drive to work for many has become a daily adventure, and it seems that the snow is just going to never end. As bad as it seems, it’s nothing if one consider how bad the winter of 1977 -78 was. “When I was your age” is a favorite statement of parents everywhere. In the case of bad winters I think we have the youths of today beat. Let’s take a look at the winter that truly seemed like it was never going to end. First a blizzard struck the area on Jan 26 effectively shutting the region down for the next five days. It was the worst storm in Ohio history and was so bad that the National Guard was activated to open roads and rescue people. In all 51 people died in the storm in Ohio alone. It was cold. Real cold. For a time the temperature dropped into the teens, the MINUS teens.
